For EBN we investigated how the future hydrogen storage needs can be met through combinations of salt caverns and depleted gas fields. For this study we further developed our hydrogen storage simulation tool.
Specifically, the study assesses to what extent different combinations of gas fields and salt caverns can meet the required storage volume and the necessary injection and withdrawal capacities. It also examines the extent to how insufficient storage can lead to lost hydrogen load (insufficient hydrogen available from storage) or curtailment of renewables (insufficient injection capacity available).
The study was used as input for the National Agenda for Underground Hydrogen Storage by the Dutch Ministry of Climate and Green Growth.
